March 1, 2010
Dear First Grade Parents,

We have school everyday this week and get out at 1 pm on Wednesday. I hope your children are all well enough to return to school. There were 7 students absent on Wednesday. We have ATI testing in Reading and Math to do this week. All students need to complete it this week. Please have your children on time to school and try not to pick them up early unless completely necessary.

Registration packets for next school year were sent home on the 15th of February. Please fill them out now. Many of you completed them and returned them and I thank you for that. If you did not please return them now to save your spot for next school year. If you are do not plan to return for next school year please return the folder with a note telling us that. If you are unsure please complete the forms anyways and then you can withdraw later or you may not get a spot.

This week we will continue SFA Reading oo .We will do the read aloud. We will publish our animal report. In Math, students review counting quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. We will begin learning to count coins and dollar bills as well as exchange coins for dollar bills. We will study our phonograms and spelling words in Spelling. In Science, we will learn about the growth and development of caterpillars to butterflies.

Homework this week will be a Math worksheet each night, and reading for 20 minutes. An adult needs to sign the student’s reading log each day to show that they read each day after school. It needs to be turned in Friday. There will be homework of Spelling five times each word on Monday, each word in a sentence on Tuesday, spelling words in ABC order on Wednesday, and a practice test on Thursday. Students began receiving a daily reward for attending school and being on time. They also receive a daily reward for doing their homework: math, and spelling are required. We want your children to have the best opportunity to learn. They can only learn if they attend school. Thank you for helping me teach your children affectively.

All children are expected to be in attendance each day unless they are ill or a family emergency arises. If you know that your child is going to be absent/tardy, please call the office at 807-9668. If your child is absent for a total of 18 days, consecutive or nonconsecutive, excused or unexcused it is seen as truant and excessive. AAL reports all students with excessive absences to the Pima County Attorney’s truancy office. For more information about truancy, visit http://www.pcao.pima.gov/actnow.htm
Thank you,Mrs. Brown
