Week of March 15th, 2010

March 15, 2010
Dear First Grade Parents,
We have school on everyday this week and get out at 1 pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for Parent/Teacher conferences. We did ATI testing in Reading and Math last week. After the results in Reading and Writing most children raised their scores from December, but as a class our scores are still too low. I will review the results with you at the conference. Please call me at school if I didn’t sign you up for a conference. Reminder slips are in your child’s homework folder.
Registration packets for next school year were sent home on the 15th. Please fill them out now. Many of you completed them and returned them and I thank you for that. If you did not please return them now to save your spot for next school year. If you are do not plan to return for next school year please return the folder with a note telling us that. If you are unsure please complete the forms anyways and then you can withdraw later or you may not get a spot.
This week we will continue SFA Reading with-y as in fly. We will do the read aloud. We will draft our personal narrative. In Math, we are working on fractions and counting money. We will study our phonograms and spelling words in Spelling. In Science, we will continue experimenting with balancing different objects.
Homework this week will be a Math worksheet each night, and reading for 20 minutes. An adult needs to sign the student’s reading log each day to show that they read each day after school. It needs to be turned in Thursday. There will be homework of Spelling five times each word on Monday, each word in a sentence on Tuesday, ABC order on Wednesday, a practice test for Thursday. Spelling test is on Friday.

Students began receiving a daily reward for attending school and being on time. They also receive a daily reward for doing their homework: math, and spelling are required. We want your children to have the best opportunity to learn. They can only learn if they attend school. Thank you for helping me teach your children affectively.
All children are expected to be in attendance each day unless they are ill or a family emergency arises. If you know that your child is going to be absent/tardy, please call the office at 807-9668. If your child is absent for a total of 18 days, consecutive or nonconsecutive, excused or unexcused it is seen as truant and excessive. AAL reports all students with excessive absences to the Pima County Attorney’s truancy office. For more information about truancy, visit http://www.pcao.pima.gov/actnow.htm

Thank you, Mrs. Brown
