Dear First Grade Parents,
We have school everyday this week and get out at 1 pm on Wednesday. I hope your children are all well enough to return to school. There were 7 students absent on Wednesday. We have ATI testing in Reading and Math to do this week. All students need to complete it this week. Please have your children on time to school and try not to pick them up early unless completely necessary.
Registration packets for next school year were sent home on the 15th of February. Please fill them out now. Many of you completed them and returned them and I thank you for that. If you did not please return them now to save your spot for next school year. If you are do not plan to return for next school year please return the folder with a note telling us that. If you are unsure please complete the forms anyways and then you can withdraw later or you may not get a spot.
This week we will continue SFA Reading oo .We will do the read aloud. We will publish our animal report. In Math, students review counting quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. We will begin learning to count coins and dollar bills as well as exchange coins for dollar bills. We will study our phonograms and spelling words in Spelling. In Science, we will learn about the growth and development of caterpillars to butterflies.
Homework this week will be a Math worksheet each night, and reading for 20 minutes. An adult needs to sign the student’s reading log each day to show that they read each day after school. It needs to be turned in Friday. There will be homework of Spelling five times each word on Monday, each word in a sentence on Tuesday, spelling words in ABC order on Wednesday, and a practice test on Thursday. Spelling test is on Friday.

The Spaghetti Dinner and Love of Reading Night on last Thursday was fun! Thank you Naomi, Sasha, Lalyiah, Gabriel Romero, Rachel, and Emily for coming and reading to you families.
We only have school Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday this week! We have Rodeo Vacation Thursday, and Friday. We return to school on Monday, March 1st, 2010. Have a great few days off.

This week is Love of Reading Week! We will need spaghetti for our Reading Night on Thursday. You can donate $1.00 or a one-pound package of uncooked spaghetti now, or bring a one-pound package of cooked spaghetti that night. Please read the letter about the events on the other side of this paper. Please come Thursday at 5 pm for Love of Reading Night and Spaghetti Dinner. All are welcome!!!!!!!!

In Math, students continue Unit 7 with 3D shapes such as cones, cylinders, and prisms. We will study our phonograms and spelling words in Spelling. In Social Studies, We will learn about the presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We will begin the new Science unit on Plants.
Homework this week will be a Math worksheet each night, and reading for 20 minutes. An adult needs to sign the student’s reading log each day to show that they read each day after school. Love of Reading Week- February 15th- 19th, 2010

Dear Parents and Guardians;
We are celebrating Love of Reading Week February 15-19, 2010. We invite you to celebrate with us at home and school. We are encouraging your children to shut off the TV and video games for this week in February. We invite them to spend time reading with you and alone. Reading opens so many doors for all of us. At school there will be activities centered on reading each day.
Our schedule is as follows:
Monday/February 15, 2010: Guest Reader Day: We have invited Guest Readers to visit our school at 9:00am. They will read in each class. The guest readers are Councilwoman Mrs. Romero or her Aide, Policeman Sgt. Gallego, Olympian Swimmer Lacey Nymeyer, Director of school Mrs. Strozier, Elementary Principal, Ms. Ayon, and Jr. High Principal Mr. Strozier.
Tuesday/February 16, 2010: Door Judging. Students will illustrate a door with their interpretation of a class selected book. These doors will be judged and prizes given.
Wednesday/February 17, 2010: Read Me Day. Students are invited to wear a shirt, jeans and/or buttons with words on them. ALL clothing will be school appropriate. Only those students participating in this activity are allowed to have an extra jean day.
Thursday/February 18, 2010: Spaghetti Dinner/Registration/Reading Evening. Come join us after tutoring classes for a Spaghetti Dinner and night of reading fun. Your child is invited to read to his/her family in his/her class. We will enjoy milk and cookies as refreshments. You will be able to register your child(ren) for the school year 2010-2011 at Arizona Academy of Leadership. The event will begin at 5:00 pm with dinner followed by reading fun. The evening will conclude at 6:30pm. The Spaghetti Dinner assignments are: Spaghetti: K-1, Spaghetti Sauce: 2-4, Salad and Dressing: 5-6, and Cookies: 7-8. Thank you for your support. See your child’s teacher if there are any questions.
Friday/February 19, 2010: D.E.A.R. Time-Drop Everything and Read. Each class will have a thirty minutes time period after their lunch break to read quietly in their classroom. Students are invited to wear P.J.s to school. We are encourage blankets, pillows and stuffed animals to be left at home. Slippers can be wore IN THE CLASSROOM ONLY.
Reading opens many doors.
