Week of August 30th, 2010

August 30, 2010
Dear First Grade Families,
This past week we practiced following the rules and procedures. Many students did better this week. Other received consequences for their breaking of rules. We will continually work on following the rules so that our class can be learning not disruptive.

Half of the class is doing their spelling homework and reading logs. Please help your child practice their words with daily spelling homework. Daily reading is important. Sign the reading log after they read 20 minutes each day. Keep up with completing math sheets also. I have stapled an example page with the spelling homework for each day on it. The words are not our words this week.

This week we are practicing letter sounds as well as working on comprehension as we listen to Harry the Dirty Dog in SFA Reading. We are identifying endings of words such as –s, -es, -ed, and –ing in Language Arts. In Science we are starting our own Rock Collection as we identify and compare our rocks. In Social Studies we are learning the meaning of the stripes and stars on the U.S. Flag, and the Pledge of Allegiance. We will create our own U. S. Flag. In Math we are learning to do simple story problems, exploring with pattern blocks, geoboards, and base 10 blocks, as well as reviewing for our first Assessment on Friday. Tests are 50% of our grade so I will review the day before and send a review sheet home for homework. In writing we will continue learning to do prewriting and about how to get great ideas into our stories so that they are interesting.

Our homework:
1. Monday- write each word five times, read 20 minutes, and a math sheet
2. Tuesday- Write each word in a sentence, read 20 minutes, and a math sheet.
3. Wednesday- Write your words in ABC Order, read 20 minutes, and a math sheet.

Week of August 23rd-27th, 2010

August 23rd, 2010
Dear First Grade Parents,

This past week was a little rougher. The students need to work on keeping their hands to themselves, using restroom during recesses, and being better listeners. You should receive this newsletter every Monday unless Monday is a holiday. They will also have reading, math, and spelling homework daily with the exception of Friday. Thank you for all the supplies you provided. I will ask for Kleenex tissues, hand soap, and hand sanitizer throughout the year as it begins to be used up. I plan to photo copy one book a week to use with their reading log. Donations of copy paper would be greatly appreciated in order to be able to copy the books the students need.
This week we will continue learning phonograms, blending words, writing narratives using prewriting, and word endings in reading and writing. In Math we will learn to use tally marks, comparing and ordering numbers, making calendars, and playing games in small groups. In social studies we are learning about community helpers such as teachers and firefighter. In science we are learning about sorting rocks by their attributes such as size, color, or shape.
Here is their daily homework. They will write each spelling word five times on Monday. On Tuesday, they will write each word in a sentence. On Wednesday, they will put the words in ABC order. On Thursday, you need to give them a practice test and sign it. On Friday, I will give a test in class. Everyday they will have a math page to do. Also, a reading log will be sent home for the students to record their 20 minutes of reading on. Please also sign the reading log. All homework is due daily. I will return the reading log each day so they can have it for their homework. If they get 100% on their Monday pretest I will give them bonus words to do with their homework and be test on Friday. Only the regular first grade words will be put as a grade in the grade book.

Dear First Grade Parents,

Our first week of school went well. The students learned and will continue to practice classroom procedures so we can have an awesome learning environment.

Please talk to your child about keeping their hands to themselves, and about not using their bodies (hitting, kicking, etc.) to get another students’ attention. No one should be touched or hurt in any way while at school. I will let you know on a daily basis how your child did in their behavior by using a card in their homework folder. Feel free to ask questions you may have about how they are doing academically and behaviorally.
